Yesterday, 28 October 2011, the Bolshoi theatre was reopened by President Medvedev, after 6 years of restoration, with an opening-night gala, featuring a program of all-Russian music, ballet and opera with scheduled performances by Natalia Osipova, Placido Domingo, Natalie Dessay and many others.
The Bolshoi theatre was opened for the first time in Moscow in 1776 for masquerades during the reign of Catherine the Great. After a fire, the current theatre opened on the same site in 1825 as the Imperial Bolshoi Theatre of Moscow.
The Bolshoi Theatre has returned to its 19th-century glory but with 21st-century amenities; a dynamic stage, which can be made horizontal or inclined to accommodate more kinds of productions; an enlarged orchestra pit able to fit 130 people (one of the largest in the world) and spaces beneath the theatre, including an underground concert hall for rehearsals and chamber concerts, that essentially doubles the theatre’s size.
