2011 — the Year of Spain in Russia and the Year of Russia in Spain

The Spanish King Juan Carlos I opened last week officially the Year of Spain in Russia and the Year of Russia in Spain for which over 700 events are planned.

Spain will take active part in the Saint-Petersbourg economic forum and Information and Communication Technologies Forum. In its turn, Russia will arrange an exposition of innovative technologies in Spain. The two countries are planning to jointly launch a new telescope for investigation of ultralong-range space objects. There will be a meeting of presidents of Russian and Spanish colleges and universities where they will discuss the issue of expanding scientific cooperation between the two countries.

The most intense cooperation will be in the cultural domain, it will be focused on exchange in opera and ballet performances. As Gerard Mortier, artistic director of the Teatro Real, said, the Novosibirsk Opera and Ballet will come on tour to Spain, and on December 5, 2011 there will be a gala concert in Madrid, in which celebrities of the Bolshoy and Mariinsky theaters will perform. In its turn, the Spain National Ballet will give performances in Russia.

In addition, the Russian State Hermitage will arrange an exhibition of works from the collection of the famous Madrid museum Prado, and the Pushkin Fine Arts Museum will put on display works by Salvador Dali. Contemporary Russian artists will demonstrate their works in Madrid on the traditional art fair ARKO. Spain will be the guest country at the Moscow International Book Exhibition and Fair and at Moscow International Tourism Fair.
