Polish parliamentary elections 2011

The Election Commission has now published the official results of Poland’s elections, last Sunday 9 October 2011. The victory goes for the second time to Donald Tusk’s “Civic Platform” [PL: Platforma Obywatelska] with 39,18% of votes cast.

The rightwing opposition party “Law and Justice” [PL: Prawo i Sprawiedliwość, PiS] of the mercurial and combative Jarosław Kaczyński, a former prime minister and twin brother of the Polish president killed in an air crash last year, ended second with 29,98%. The third place is for “Palikot’s Movement” [PL: Ruch Palikota, RP] with 10 %. This result is somewhat surprising as this socially libertarian-style party has campaigned to create civil unions for gay men and lesbians, to legalize abortion and even to end religious education in state schools. The rural “Polish People’s Party” [PL: Polskie Stronnictwo Ludowe, PSL], Mr. Tusk’s previous coalition partner, took 8.36%.

The victory of Tusk is not completely surprising as under his government, Poland has avoided the recession at the height of the economic crisis in 2009.
Investors hailed the outcome as a guarantee of political and economic stability in the European Union's largest eastern member in turbulent times, but Fitch ratings agency, however, urged Warsaw to move swiftly to put its public finances in order.
